BOULDER, Col./TAMPA, Fla. (October 13, 2017) – Pocket Outdoor Media, LLC (POM), announced today its acquisition of the media publication properties of IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings Company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The new business will be headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.
These properties include VeloNews – the leading cycling news brand; Triathlete– the world’s leading triathlon media property or the world’s oldest, largest and most respected triathlon magazine; Women’s Running – the world’s largest women-specific running magazine; Competitor – a leading resource for runners; and; VeloPress – the world’s leading publisher of cycling, running, triathlon and swimming books.
“All these media brands are the most respected and widely-read within their individual sports,” said Felix Magowan, partner in POM. “My partners and I look forward to growing these iconic titles, as well as their sister digital operations. We plan to immediately explore various new avenues for growth and innovation, and for restoring these brands to their historical and storied industry leadership.”
Felix Magowan will be CEO of the business going forward, and will focus on the advertising/sales function of the new company. Greg Thomas will serve as COO, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company and Steve Maxwell will oversee the strategic and corporate development aspects of the business. This management team has a diverse and complementary set of general business and publishing industry skills and experience, and will focus immediately on the rebuilding of these legacy and industry-leading publications, as well as aggressively targeting other growth and diversification opportunities for the acquired print and digital media operations.
POM is owned by the three partners: Felix Magowan, Greg Thomas and Steve Maxwell. Magowan is the former owner of Inside Communications (parent to VeloNews, Inside Triathlon, Ski Racing, VeloGear, VeloPress, et.al.) and a long-time sports and media industry entrepreneur. Greg Thomas is former COO of Inside Communications, currently CEO of SpaceNews and a well-known expert in digital media.
